Kitchen Remodeling Ideas
- Start with a theme. The multitude of decisions on cabinets, lighting, floor finish, color schemes, countertops all get a little simpler if you are working towards a certain theme.
Examples:
- Country: Heavy detailed wood legs at the island corners, wainscoating inside of door panels, drapery on the windows/doors.
- Contemporary: sleek simple door designs, stainless steel appliances, modern lighting fixtures.
- Rustic: Exposed or faux wood beams, wide plank flooring, knotty cabinetry.
- Traditional: Strip oak flooring, granite tops, natural wood door styles.
- Decide if you can fit an island or peninsula which add to your options:
- second sink.
- additional storage
- additional eating area.
- two tiered countertop to hid dishes, etc.
- Eliminate support columns/partition walls:
- once the old kitchen and wall finishes are removed you are already half way to modifying the framing.
- kitchens that flow into the eating area and into the family room are a big asset when selling.
- Is the kitchen for feeding the family or holiday entertaining.
- Larger stoves and refrigerators are nice but come at a premium.
- Do you need six burners and a commercial grade exhaust fan with accompanying hood?
- Do you need two sinks and two ovens?
- How many amenities and decorative features do you want?
- spice racks, pull out shelves in lower cabinets, utensil dividers, pull out garbage pails, lazy susans, undercounter lighting, decorative legs, wine racks.
- Crown moldings, undercounter lighting rails, end panels, tile backsplashes with accent pieces, and nice knobs makes simple kitchens appear to be high end kitchens.
